I Am British

Another Olympics where this little island nation totally punched above their weight. More golds than China and golds in a wider variety of events than any other nation. That includes the Olympic behemoth that is the USA. Absolutely awesome.

Why did your team identify as GB instead of UK??

not sure to be honest. as far as i know, it's always been GB in the Olympics. maybe the word Great is supposed to inspire the athletes????

there's a few weird conventions like that in other spheres. for example, in the world of Foreign Exchange, our currency is called GBP or GB£. but, there are Scottish Pounds and there are English Pounds. they both have the same value, they're just minted under the authority of the respective national banks.

trust me, it can be very confusing being a Brit 🤓

Was Northern Ireland not part of your Olympic team? The only difference between GB and UK would be Northern Ireland and some channel islands, right??

Maybe the Irish all competed as a unified team??? Inquiring minds need to know.

Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales all competed under the GB banner. RoI fielded their own Olympic team. erm........obviously.

btw Jade Jones, the womens TKD gold medalist, is Welsh :)

Well, Scotland and Wales are part of Great Britain so that makes sense. Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain, but is part of the United Kingdom. So you see my confusion!

And yes, I saw her win. I knew she was from GB/UK, but didn't know she is Welsh.

Lol yup, I imagine. I brought this up today with my mom. You've never seen eyes gloss over so quick. 🙄 But seriously -- England, Britain, The United Kingdom, The British Isles ... all of these things are different and I think most Americans consider it all basically the same.

btw Sara, i've missed hearing that little expression of yours:

"Inquiring minds need to know."
