You're right about many of us feeling lonely, but I wonder if it's because of us demanding too much out of the people who surround us or then again perhaps it's the whole of society not being cohesive enough any more. Personally, I think that it's about the use of our time. Have we, or rather do we spent enough time doing stuff instead of thinking about it?

The Internet has played a role in that we don't feel the need to be together in groups. Texting has replace oral dialogue, so we are isolated on our little silos.
