Genuine question based off another post I’ve just seen

Other than Big Ben, the Beatles and oasis. What culture do English people actually have? Rest of our “culture” doesn’t seem to belong to us

Strike Oasis off that list. Overrated pub band imho.

Loads BTW.

Chaucer. Shakespeare. Milton. Dickens. Tolkien. Fleming. Rowling. To give a few literary starters.

Music - Handel. Holst. Britten. Then Beatles, blues revivalists (OK stolen but then turned to its own thing). Heavy metal ie Black Sabbath, Deep Purple Led Zeppelin etc.
For true cultural authenticity though. English folk music and all it's derivatives. Scottish dancing and music. Welsh male voice choirs.

Dance morris dancing, Jack o'the green etc.

@OldBrit jack o lantern was Irish. Welsh singers are well Welsh. Same with Scottish dancers. The rest I’ll hold my hands up we have music and a few writers

@OldBrit the Green Man...
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Convivial he's called Jack o'the Green or Jack in the Green in processions near where I live.
Convivial · 26-30, F
@OldBrit i believe the term green man is a more ancient term

@Convivial much controversy around the whole thing. Possibly only dates from 17th century but open to debate.
