Trust your gut, or whatever organ you are using to feel it in the air. I'm considered white (although my mother's family all came from the same peninsula that Spain is on), and I have been in Northern cities where the bigotry and racism was palpable in the air. And some Southern cities that have progressed a long ways from the Jim Crow days of open segregation, like separate drinking fountains, restrooms, and off-limit public facilities and separate seating. Had a brief exposure to that as well thanks to the U.S. Army, and largely stayed on base with my barracks-mates of color who felt it was a safe oasis.
