I once met a man who shared with me that
when feminists call a man "a male chauvinist pig" (sexist, etc)
all it does is shame him without educating.
Shame triggers retaliation - hence the rearguard fightback against social progress.

Some racists don't even know they are racist and get offended when accused.
The problem is complicated by different kinds of racism.

Some forms are due to ignorance, such as with people who, by birth and chance, have had little or no exposure to people of different social backgrounds. Their impressions of others' differences depend on what they see and hear media. And most media outlets are biased in one way or another.

Some racists are actively supremacist. They really do feel threatened.
They expect to be hated by those whose forebears they've harmed in the past, and those who've always lived with trauma, systemic disadvantage etc.
They respond by acting to keep those others "in their place" or, in some cases, by murder and genocide.

In some cases, religious belief can have racism (the us-not-them attitude) built into it: "only we are God's chosen".

All kinds of prejudice are harmful.
