What its like having a racist friend

In truth I dont think shes really that racist she is a great person and 90% of the time shes great but their is a issue of her constantly making childish racist jokes. She has a Mexican boyfriend she keeps making fun of Mexicans and their life style. I am black and I was drying my clothes and she touchedd them and then after touching them said she felt the need to break dance even though they were just regular clothes.

Shes great but its always constant childish remarks in relation to gender and race. She told me that I have to like spicey food cause I'm black. If I wear a white t shirt I look like a rapper she calls even though I don't like rap. She is good but she makes little comments like this daily. The reason I am not so hard on her about it is because shes a drug addict and I see that as a handicap but these kinds of daily comments are so annoying.

I hope I don't sound sensitive or like a cry baby but its daily. Like I said I feel strange about it because she is a amazing person.

What about her is amazing ? I’d probably get tired of the racial stuff if it were constant. I have a friend with whom I can make the occasional joke, but it’s not all the time. We were going to a movie awhile back and I wanted to sit closer to the front. He asked, "Are you feeling the need to talk back to the screen ?"

@bijouxbroussard Well she is a kind person and when you think of racism you think hate shes not a hateful person shes just childish in many ways and its draining. Of course a occasional joke is ok but everyday?? In truth they arent even jokes they are just childish remarks.
@bushi2020 Racism isn’t always openly hateful, that’s an insidious thing about it. I’ve encountered racists who genuinely thought they liked me, although they were just as convinced I was inferior, through no fault of my own, you understand.

I guess the thing is, if the constant racial comments bother you and you told her so, would she hear you and attempt to cut back ? Or would she make it about you being "oversensitive" ? That’s the telling point right there.

@bijouxbroussard She would say that I am oversensitive she will give examples of Dave Chapelle and his famous black klans man skit to prove racism is funny or she will talk about the South Park episode that makes fun of JLO. Its complicated because she is a great friend of mine its just strange.
@bushi2020 That’s racist, unfortunately. Not listening but trying to justify being racially insensitive. I mean, she’s not Dave Chappelle. It’s like some white people who think they should be able to use the "n" word freely because some black people do, and refuse to understand that it’s not the same. 😳
