What are your thoughts on worldwide immigration?

Let’s talk about immigration… specifically about those fleeing wars and other terrors, including famine and an economy so bad their children are starving.

Do you feel like a country (any country, but specifically yours) has a responsibility to take in, humanly care for, shelter, and rehome (keep them in your country) these immigrants?

Should there be a global standard or should each country be on its own to do as it wishes in regard to immigrants fleeing wars/terror and abject poverty/hunger?

I say this as someone who has volunteered in shelters, with homeless. I used to get angry at right-wingers who claimed that we put others ahead of citizens who are struggling or homeless. After volunteering for the last 30 years and seeing even veterans in our kitchens, I feel that before we give anything to anyone else, we need to make sure that our citizens who are in need are fed and provided with housing. It kills me that in a city of billionaires, there are even folks with children, sleeping on the streets.

@bijouxbroussard I don't disagree - I've seen it myself, volunteer in shelters and know the problems we face at home, but that too is solvable.
@Ontheroad So why won’t we solve it ? What’s getting in our way ? 🥺

@bijouxbroussard The will. Nothing but the will. Well, a bit of the milk of human kindness AND the will... we have everything else.
@bijouxbroussard whats getting in our way?

Its the fact that the 'haves' that got what they have from this biased syatem - don't want to break it.
They are still gaining from it ....for minimal effort.

You think about it. Government was designed over 100 years ago . The hard work has already been done.
But politicians these days are hard pressed to even maintain and tweak an already running system - heaven forbid they actually work more than one day a week allocating others to do their work for them .

No...it means they'd have to understand economy, have ethics and upset a syatem thats geared for THEM to live comfortably.

We are on a one way trajectory towards our own anihilation.

From which the poor will arrise from.

We will break. And only those who know how to cope with brokeness will survive.

Sorry - greed just shits me to tears

@OogieBoogie You hit it already... it's fear and greed. Too many people fear anyone and anything not them, and are so damn afraid of others taking what is theirs.
@OogieBoogie @Ontheroad
Unfortunately, you’re both right.
Those who could make it happen, don’t want to. And many either have a vested interest in seeing that it doesn’t; or are being compensated by such individuals.

@bijouxbroussard @OogieBoogie None of this makes sense. Let's take just the net worth of all the billionaires in the U.S. It's around $5.259 Trillion, TRILLION!

If we took just our people (adults and children) living in poverty and brought them up to a middle-class income, it would cost us less than half that and then they could become part of the economy and produce income for themselves and our country.

Sure, it would be a massive and expensive investment, but the outcome would change so much... Imagine the new tax base, how all the programs for those in poverty could disappear, and on and on.

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but that sounds like a win for all.
@Ontheroad But see, you’re not selfish and greedy. Those who are don’t want to give up any of it. Even with charity they want tax deductions to get it back. Even if they have more than they personally could spend in a few lifetimes…more than their children could spend.
@bijouxbroussard EXACTLY!
I dont understand how they can never see an end to want of 'more money' .
More money than they need
More money than they can use
More money than they can spend...!!

Its crazy.

Its like greed is this self propelling disease, that once started - never stops.

@OogieBoogie I think it's more the power that the money brings them... money means power, especially when you have millions and billions. It makes you somebody. An a hole probably, but it gives you power and stature, both of which are addictive.
@Ontheroad yeah .

But you can't take that type of power with you wjen you die🤷

I dunno .
Maybe their souls are seduced by materialism 🤔
Ontheroad · M
@OogieBoogie I dunno either, and people like us will never know, not really.

I've worked with and for people who are driven to be successful, it's what makes them feel good, how they measure their worth, and they are never as happy as when they have the power to achieve great monetary gains... regardless of what it costs others.

I don't get it either. Money is what I need to eat and have a place to live... it is not who I am.
@Ontheroad yep. same .
I watched my ex wreck his life....and mine , over money and stuff🙄

I don't see it keeping him ecstatic 🙄🤷
Ontheroad · M
@OogieBoogie that's one variation of the "regardless of what it costs others" part.

I never understood it and never will.
