The psychology of the parents is that they are insecure people who seek validation about themselves and their parenting by bragging about their kids and making it sound like their kid is better then someone else.
They also criticize their kids and never tell them they are proud of their accomplishments or that they did a good job, but instead admit to their child that they are unsatisfied with them. This encourages stress in the household, and it encourages the child to work extra hard to please said parent. Which makes the parent feel better and feel loved. While the child takes on the workload of supporting a parent socially and emotionally.
Truth is they might love their children very much, but they love the use they get out of their children more rather then actually encouraging and supporting their kids and being kind to them. Some parents can't take care of themselves much less another human being.
Sometimes parents are also purposefully cold, because they think it will build good character. They are afraid of having a child who does not meet their expectations.

that's an interesting way to put it, it really is like a full time job and these kids are forced to mature faster. I guess in such cases parental love is conditional.
