What's the psychology behind parents who brag about their children's achievements to everyone

but to their kids' faces they act indifferent or even criticize them (for example "you could have done better")?

They push them through critics as they think it's how they best help them become sucessful, it's a family culture for many Asians, the bragging is because they see their kids as an extension of themselves and their life sucess.
