Imagine for a moment that you have only ever seen humans of Northern European descent. You are completely unaware that there are humans with dark skin and black curly hair just a few thousand miles south of where you have lived your entire life. You would be shocked, would you not, to see such a human? It is possible you might not even recognize such a human as human.

@CorvusBlackthorne yes very shocking, not in 2024 and the internet though

@being It would be exceedingly difficult to find someone that sheltered in the year 2024, it is true. However, that was what the hypothetical question was.

@CorvusBlackthorne then it'd be shocking! Same for a black kid in Africa, encountering a white kid for the first time.

@being I want to say that it's not that absurd if you think about it as there's a lot of variables to what Corvus proposed.
A person can see black people and know they're out there but also having never talked to different cultures at the same time. You could still be racist simply because they've never been exposed. YouTube matches your own algorithm so the more you look up one subject, the more of the same pops up. If the person is only watching certain forms of media, they are not being exposed to different cultures to develop any social awareness, these people are stunted that way.
Aside from media, there's language to consider. What's offensive in one culture isn't offensive in another. They don't stop to consider that language can change everything from how you joke around to personality to what you find offensive as people think that only the cultures within an American concept exist.
