Why does nationalism still hold us enslaved in the twenty-first century?

The new Roman Empire that is Europe, should have steadied up a little, and perhaps the Russian Federation should have equalised things with their old Soviet republics neighbours, so such a thing as the war in Ukraine was impossible. After all, each people should be able to self-determine, but the old relationships between peoples should be done in a peaceful co-dependence, interdependence, that stops the dreadful chance of war.

We had wars of nationalism the whole of the Twentieth century, surely we are past that!
We certainly could simplify politics!
Then peace and socialism would be universal law.
Killers will kill us all to prevent that!

The thing to understand when looking at human politics is that humans haven't really evolved very much in the last couple thousand years. Nationalism is basically an evolution of tribalism, which became ingrained in our DNA when the world was much smaller. You never knew what that band of humans over the next hill had in mind.

Now we are capable of literally communicating with almost anybody on the planet, and having conferences between world leaders on opposite sides of the world. It's time to ditch the provincial tribal mindset, but it's very hard.
