Is it just my kid or is this the new culture now?

I feel older son is very confused, or he is just going with the norm. All of a sudden seems half of his Sophmore classmates are non binary and they are so sensitive I can’t say one thing without being called a homophobic or a racist.

I listened to a podcast with a sexologist who is specialized in treating transgender people the other day and she was saying she had noticed the increase in number of these people in recent years and how she has absolutely no explanation for it and no cure for them. She said they treat transgender people, not confused people who don't know what they want and that this whole trend might have pretty bad consequences in the long run. It was a quite interesting take on things from the point of a view of an actual expert.

@CrazyMusicLover Sexologists are experts on sexual relationships and often only have studied counseling so why would they have any expertise on the subject of gender dysphoria?

@Gloomy No, they can be psychiatrists, therefore doctors. I don't know but it's given by law in some countries that before you start hormonal therapy you have to visit a sexologist. Probably because it was historically grouped together with sexual disorders and deviations, not sure if it still is or what. This one doctor is specialized in gender dysphoria and seems to be very liked by transgender people who went to her. There are some that have or used to have quite bizarre methods of assessment though and have a bad rap. They did plethysmography with some disturbing images and shit like that.

@CrazyMusicLover I only know that psychiatrists need to be visited. I seriously hope those laws have been thrown into the trash since sexologists are not ideal to treat trans people.

@Gloomy Honestly, hearing about those tests I think so too. But I think the condition is they have to visit a psychiatrist who is also a sexologist. It has to be a doctor. Tbh, before I thought it was in the hands of endocrinologists in the first place.
@CrazyMusicLover That person may be an expert on gender dysphoria, but they’re ignorant of sociology. The reason there are more trans kids now is because they feel safe to come out as there’s less chance that they will be murdered for it.

@LeopoldBloom That's not something that would be up to me to judge but even if, you could hardly be surprised as she's a doctor not a sociologist, it's not her field of study. From what I gathered is that her main role is to correctly assess which individual needs hormonal treatment and possible srs and therefore it's completely understandable that she can't help someone who switches from one gender to another or uses neutral grammar gender. After all, those people don't tend to seek professional help in the first place. She just mentioned that if someone like that comes and asks for "a bit of hormones" she has to explain to them that it doesn't work like that.

She said that the number of transgirls coming to her didn't increase on average for the past 20 years, only that now they come at earlier age. But there's a phenomenon in last 4-5 years that suddenly there's a big influx of 14-15 year old girls who identify as males but they deviate from classic cases because their gender dysphoria only started recently. She also states there are no common factors such as possible sexual trauma or the patterns of attention-seeking behaviour that might point to other disorders. Societal demands on women to behave certain ways also seem to be far less powerful now than they were in past so it would be quite interesting to learn what really is behind it all.

I searched for some videos about detransition on Youtube and it really looks like it's almost exclusively the group of girls that started hormonal treatment in 13-15 and reconsidered it when they became 18-22.
@CrazyMusicLover I'm still convinced that in the past, more masculine girls kept their mouths shut, same as effeminate boys. Same reason gays and lesbians stayed in the closet. They were always here, they just didn't come out until recently.

My only comment on anyone who starts to transition and changes their mind later is...they changed their mind. I remember talking to one woman on here who was despondent because she wanted to be a man and knew it was impossible. She didn't want to take hormones and have a penis constructed, she wanted to be a man. So I can see someone like that starting the process, then stopping when they decide it's not worth the effort when they can't reach their goal.

@LeopoldBloom There are various cases but a few actually sued clinics and doctors for misdiagnosing them. And they were misdiagnosed because later they switched back to their original gender and wished they had their sex organs back or to have feminine voice again. Many claimed they later realized that their desire was based on gender stereotypes coming from society rather than their inner need to be in a different body. It's really sad but it happens.
@CrazyMusicLover That's why doctors need malpractice insurance. But unless the surgery was botched or the doctor knowingly lied to the patient to fool them into having the procedure, I don't see how anyone could have a case.
