Being disabled and unable to contribute anything could turn a person bitter. Especially if that person was very active before they became disabled.
It seems like your options are to find a way to distance yourself from them, continue as things are now, or try to find what his interests are or what he did before becoming disabled. Maybe he feels as though the world has passed him by, abandoned him. Once again, that could cause a person to become bitter. Of course that would take some effort on your part that you feel may just not be worth it.
