I had a mate. We were with each other for almost four years consistently until she chose to leave me. According to her friend, it was because she thought I was "too good for her". Believe me, I am not making that up. I have never heard of a more ridiculous reason to leave someone, but it is not my responsibility to remedy the situation. She made her choice. I had no expectation of finding someone through this group, but I felt the need to express a very specific experience.

You have my sympathy on that one. Yes, it really is a ridiculous reason. Unfortunately it does come up. I recently faced something similar with a girl I was still getting to know. Also my ex girlfriend tried pulling that on me a couple times.
Sometimes they really believe it, and other times it's just an excuse to get out of the relationship.

I must say that I would agree, even though I have not had a lover yet. It just seems like it would be logical, if I were to think in place of said mate.

It is sad. I do not blame a lot of women for some things they do. Modern culture feeds them mixed messages and often puts them in situations where anything they do makes them look bad. For guys, it's almost expected that we should be the ones to break it off. That said, there are many people out there who just take the cop-out route.
