Things currently happening
Working and living where I do, it can be a real culture shock, even though I have been in the same area for the last 10 years and working at the same company for the last 4. It seems like every day I am exposed to the true underbelly of hicks.
Now, let me say from the start, this is not inclusive of everyone. I have met some really good people here and have some really good friends who share a lot of my values and ideas. Even those who are questionable in their politics are still good people when it comes to community. As always, with them, I assume ignorance over malice. They simply don’t know because they have never had to actually learn.
But I have to tell you, sometimes, the people do make me despair for America.
Currently, the most recent issues I have heard are:
The factory I work for hires “illegals” and “underage” people because they get fake papers and are taking advantage of “our” government. Some people have loudly professed they are proud to be a “colonizer”.
*sigh*
That the hispanics (called Latinos because…) only want hispanics working here and they are bullying everyone who isn’t a spanish speaker.
*sigh*
So many women dating so many different guys and having so many children. And so many guys trying to avoid responsibility for the children they had out of their own infidelities. 70% of the mee who work here have children from at least 3 different women. The majority of these men have extensive criminal records.
People ask me why I’m not dating…
And the most recent outrage:
A person who is gay and is registered as a violent sex offender with a child (not just minor. A child.) is potentially getting a supervisory position over the entire production floor. They are upset he is a pedophile. Do they say anything hateful about the president? No, of course not.
To be clear, I’m not in support of this person getting the position for a number of reasons before being made aware he was a violent sex offender. He just shouldn’t be put in that position because his personality is such that getting that kind of control would go to his head. Knowing that he was violently abusive to a child in the worst possible way solidifies that opinion. But it’s not up to me.
As I listen to the people here, blue collar America continues to prove that it really is the worst of the worst, the most happily uneducated, and the most hateful because they refuse to get educated.
I wish I knew how to deal with all this, as it is really discouraging. Being a semi-frontfacing employee, conversing with them is a large part of my job. I just wish they weren’t so open about their opinions and showing their asses as they are. But to them, they wear it like a badge.
On a positive, when I started in this new position 8 months ago, one of the people here was going through something truly awful. He was coming to work, stemming, pacing and having long conversations and arguments with himself. People avoided him because they thought he was crazy. I saw that he was overstressed and overstimulated and was stemming to process it all and self sooth. Over the months, he has stopped that behavior. When I talked to him a few weeks ago, he said that he was looking forward to moving out of his parents’ house because they don’t get along, and making a positive change in his life. He has really glown up and I told him the other night that I am his biggest fan and so proud of him. It’s so wonderful seeing people who are working hard to rise above their issues instead of letting their issues take over their lives.
