America is a good country in some ways but could be better
If it underwent some structural changes in its sociopolitical and economic policies and actions. Some people say it is a free country and it is in some ways but if you are stuck at a job you hate for example because of healthcare coverage or are in medical debt, educational debt, and might worry about losing your house, I don’t think that is real freedom. There are some things the United States could learn from other countries that do more for their citizens and residents.
Universal health care coverage - it would take the pressure off employers to provide health insurance to their employees and it would just be a simpler system on a national level instead of going state by state. The option to pay for private care still remains but universal health care is a back up.
Subsidized child care-my cousin and her husband are paying $2000 a month for childcare. Again for certain schools if someone wants to pay privatized tuition fees because they can afford it fine but affordable to free child care would help many families with working parents and guardians.
Affordable to free higher education- this was once a thing up until the 1960s in the United States for instate public colleges, trade schools, and universities. I know it is tax payer subsidized but eliminating education debt is what a civilized country would do. Private schools, out of state residents, and international students maybe pay a couple thousand more dollars but no more than that. The government also should not let federal loans be a privatized predatory business and it should cap what universities can charge to its students. There should be more funding for grants and scholarships. Also if someone borrows money for whatever reason they should not have to pay until they find a job related to their field of study and make minimum income requirements maybe like an agreement that you have income sharing from your career to help pay off a few thousand dollars. College should not be more than $3,000-$10,000 per year including learning materials.
Pay employees and freelancers a livable wage. It should be mandated that businesses pay their employees the minimum living wage even in unskilled jobs like restaurants, retail, and cafes. People should not have to rely on tips because they are getting paid under minimum wage. Also don’t overwork your employees. There should be adequate staffing so everyone can take a break when needed and in addition and the government should have better rights for workers. Workers should not be coerced into working. Overtime and full time should be 30-40 hours per week and not make their workers spend more time than that at work. One job should be enough to live on. Also workers should have shares in the profits and say in the way the company is run so worker owners.
Rent control- the mortgage and rental industries are predatory. The government should stop landlords and mortgage companies from continuing to increase rents and mortgage payments. Honestly rent and mortgage payments should not be more than a couple to few hundred say $500 per month. Also encourage initiatives to build houses that are more affordable so you don’t have to take out a mortgage like building cob or adobe houses. According to this cob house.com you can build a cob house for around $60,000. Compare that to $400,000-$700,000 dollars for a house. Build houses that are affordable so people can pay in cash or pay reasonable rates. People should not have to spend decades paying back borrowed money for a house. They should really be able to own their homes.
Invest in renewable energy and green public transit. Solar, geothermal, hydro ( water). Gas can be used for some things but try to reduce carbon footprints. Fuel is fine sometimes but it should be combined with more environmentally friendly methods. As far as public transit even rural areas should have fast snd efficient trains, busses, taxi services,trams/trolleys/streetcars. One thing I hate with not being able to drive is being bound to rely on rides from family members. Actually it’s more futuristic. But having door to door public transportation. Not just for disabled people but for everyone. The transit systems will be government run and drivers would be employees of the state. Private cars could help transport anyone who can’t or chooses not to drive. Also walkability even in smaller towns and cities. It should be pedestrian friendly and not take more than a 15 minute to half hour by walking to reach the business centers. Suburbs should be walkable to encourage fitness and community. Cars can drive on some streets but sidewalks and pedestrian lanes would be used for walking. It’s one thing that drives me nuts is I have to be driven to get everywhere instead of just being able to work a short distance. I wish I could drive again but for now my parents don’t want me to. Public outdoor heating that melts snow and ice on the ground like Klamath falls, OR, snowmass Colorado, and holland Michigan.
Paid parental leave and part time workers get the same benefits as full time workers.
Decriminalizing sex workers so they can get help and rehabilitation rather than jail. Pimping
should be outlawed though.
Making all sorts of illegal drugs decriminalized. So addicts can get help and rehabilitation rather than rot in jail. For example, cocaine, lsd, heroin. And if it is decriminalized maybe it would help with the drug cartels smuggling drugs into the United States.
Making it easier to come to the USA legally. First of all end mass detentions. Proportional consequences minor immigration infractions vs public safety risks. Law enforcement needs to stop patrolling for illegal immigrants. Reception centers at borders to process claims of asylum and humanitarian natures with due process. Expand legal pathways for immigrants already here to become legal and for those crossing the border. New arrivals should have community support, legal counsel, and work authorization.
Maybe flexible temporary work visas , reduce wait times for visas,etc. use case management instead. Instead of deporting undocumented immigrants, help them come forward and pass background checks etc. and let them start the process over..I could go on.
