Question for Non Americans that have never been to the USA

I was once in the US, when I was too young to remember it well at Disneyland in California. I would most want to see the bookstores in the major cities, namely NYC, there was one that was frequented by David Bowie there that was mentioned in the commentary to Nicolas Roeg's fantastic The Man Who Fell to Earth. And maybe also some historic sites within a 100 to 200 mile radius of Boston to see where the Puritans settled, which I take it can be coincided also with my interests with the Salem Witch trials and similar things, hauntings, ghost towns, with a guide who never touches the drink.
