I think the u.s. dollar has no actual value. Currency as a commodity. Boom\bust! Does it hold\maintain value?, At gun point!
The USD was originally backed by gold until 1971 when Nixon and congress determined that there simply was not enough gold in the world to prop up the American dollar. Since that time when it was determined the dollar would remain a woven piece of cloth (swtch from hemp to cotton cloth) and not printed on paper. The "roaring cotton industry"(compared was implimented as a mechanism to insist the dollars value was relient upon (and proven by) America's cotton INDUSTRY.
Ultimately it served to confuse the issue.
