Tariff BS costing us money.

I bought a new car battery this week. I bought the same exact battery back in December. The new battery this week was $74 more than the one I bought just a few months ago. When I asked the guy at the parts store why the price went up so much he told me it was because of the tariffs. When I pointed out that the battery had a 1/25 sticker on it, well before tariffs were implemented he had nothing to say other than the computer tells the price. Do you think corporate America is taking advantage of the tariff issue?

I doubt that's any tariff. You really need to look at the next 12 months. It's a long game, not a snapshot.

@nudistsueaz it was a snapshot for me because I needed a battery last Sunday.

@Sevendays It appears that the tariffs or threats of tariffs are working. I'm sure many companies will do their best to take advantage of the tariff atmosphere, whether they actually apply to the product or not.

@nudistsueaz There really isn't any mystery with tariffs. They are a tax that is paid by the importing person or company and they are collected at the port of entry. There shouldn't be a debate about it. That is simply the way it works. Companies either have to pass on those costs to consumers or choose to absorb them or some combination of the two.

Passing them on to consumers obviously hurts the consumers.

Absorbing the costs will cut into corporate profits and expand their P/E ratios which makes stocks more expensive. When ratios get too out of line the stock market will react negatively.

All the reshoring of jobs that is promised won't happen. There will be a merry-go-round of supply line hopping to avoid the largest tariffs.

@DomMan67 I know how tariffs work. What I don’t like is an American company raising prices on American goods saying it is because of the tariff. (As per the counter person at the store)

@DomMan67 I understand completely how tariffs work but ty. 🙂. Ty for sharing your thoughts.

@Sevendays That was my point exactly.

@nudistsueaz @Sevendays Unfortunately I missed the actual question regarding if corporate America will exploit the tariffs to pad profits and I concur they will. We will find out to what extent in future profit reports. Shockingly profits will likely be at record highs as they tell us they are struggling to survive.

@DomMan67 Perhaps

@DomMan67 I don't think so. On-shoring of jobs is going to happen as companies relocate manufacturing to US states. Tariff alone won't accomplish that, but they are certainly a driver. Reduced taxes and regulations, lower energy costs added to tariffs will energize the manufacturing base that we lost. Also, tariff negotiations are lowering the tariffs others have had on US goods for decades. That opens up markets in countries we were formerly shut out of.

This is all happening as we discuss this. It's like talking about how the sausage tastes when they're not even made yet. I suggest we be patient and see how this all ends up. After all, it has taken several decades of unfair trade to get where we are today.

In the meantime, some companies are taking advantage of the situation.

@carpediem think positive

@nudistsueaz I am a positive person but not in the same way as I have seen others be positive. Example....typical leftist positivity "I am POSITIVE the world will end and democracy destroyed forever under Trump". Of course, they've been wrong about everything LOL

@carpediem They certainly have been wrong. We are so glad someone stopped the invasion.
