It took an Australian to put an art series together that did stay a real homage to the United States of America. Robert Hughes wasn't shy to show both the beauty and the ugliness of American culture through its art. Take the making of Washington DC for example. How ironic that the chosen architect for the country's capital city was someone with the family name L'Efant. Moreover, amongst the high intellects of the time there was Thomas Jefferson who was somehow also the most secular humanist of his time. How he could hold up that all men are created equal and still have slaves, well, that's another one of those typical American paradigms. Like Kenneth Clark Hughes takes next his time to look at Houdon's statue of George Washington, and it pays off
