I wish that he had vented some of that compassion at those who at this very moment may be thinking about shooting children or others to gain notoriety or revenge.

Mathew is a figure whose roles have helped sell automobiles, inspired his Longhorns to a second effort, spurred those suffering from AIDS to outwit the FDA. He can be very convincing.

By spending a few moments directly addressing those with a wish to kill others, he may have convinced one, two, maybe more to instead visualize the pain and suffering caused by such conduct. Maybe his compassionate outpouring could have convinced them that they are loved and give them a place to turn to rather than what they may be thinking of doing.

He may have also directed his compassion towards the people in general in hope of making them pay better attention to those around them who may be showing inclinations to harm others, and to seek a way to intercept before they pull the trigger.

In the years since Columbine, I have yet to see a politician, or compassionate individuals, or an interested citizen or group directly address would-be mass killers. Begging them to set their intent aside and instead come in and be loved.
