For making sure Iran does not have nuclear capabilities. Absolutely no one will be safe if they do.

Probably about 5 to 10% drop in our standard of living
This will affect our children’s welfare, education. Demands on social services.
More burden on our health sevice.
Our decaying infrastructure will get worse.
Already we are experiencing price rises of 10%.
There will be shortages too of food, pharmaceuticals..
Our life expectancy will reduce.

What sacrifice is the UK making?

@Julien Rejoining will be on completely punitive terms. The French will see to that..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman have you been reading the news lately ? Notably Jean Noel Barrot’s speech ?

@Julien I had not. I confess I was in favour of Britain leaving. Of course, no one foresaw Covid or the stupid terms that Boris left under. his friends were supposed to make the killing that never came. But Covid and Trump changed the game. If Britain could walk back in, with all forgiven they should.😷

you have been in dire straits for decades thanks to your generous social policiesand you keep taking in too many immigrants
ElwoodBlues · M
@1490wayb !!! WRONG !!!
Actually, Canada and the rest of the developed world have FAR more generous social policies. They offer universal health care, bettter pre-K support, and better retirement policies.
Regarding immigrants, among developed nations Germany and Poland are consistently top hosts of refugees relative to their population size, with Germany hosting over 2.75 million (roughly 3.4% of its population).
The US is in dire straits mostly due to the pernicious lie that tax cuts will eventually pay for themselves. This hasn't happened in the 45 years since Reagan preached it, but the urge to get something for nothing is too strong and prevents sound fiscal policy.

@ElwoodBlues The present UK Government is not cutting taxes. It is increasing them, one effect being making it far harder to run businesses and employ anyone.
What our governments of both parties have done since the Conservatives at the same time as the Reaganb era is cutting, cutting and cutting public services, and giving away vast amounts of assets to foreign companies, stock-markets and even countries. This worship of so-called "inward investment" is as naive as the term's grammar, for its result obvious to anyone except a politician is that it is tantamount to giving the country's money away abroad.

The US is more of an enemy to Europe than Iran.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
A sacrifice in a political or military sense implies a degree of choice. Here we (UK) are being dragged down by the side effects of a war between three other countries, a war of dubious purpose, morality, legality and conclusion.

@emiliya You don't know Hitlers' racial ideas? Were you not taught 20C European history, at school?
Hitlers did like to pretend Britons were somehow racially "pure" fellow-Germanics and wanted Great Britain as part of his "Third Reich" project without fighting for it if possible; but Britain was not standing for that.
He utterly despised the Jews simply for being Jewish, without any logic; and he used them as a scapegoat for his nation's WW1 defeat and her economic problems in the 1920-30s. So he wanted them exterminated. Literally.
At first the Nazis were fairly content to let Jews escape to other countries, mainly Britain and the USA, but steadily made escape more and more difficult. Many were rounded up and murdered in cold-blooded shootings or improvised gassings, many others were worked to death as slaves; but most were gassed in purpose-built killing camps like the Auschwitz-Birkenau group. That project was Hitler's "Final Solution" to the Jewish problem he invented; and was what became called "The Holocaust" by survivors.
Along with the Jews he also persecuted homosexuals, gypsies, coloureds and the mentally-ill; calling them and any non-"Aryan" cultures all "degenerate" and "untermenschen" (= sub-human).
Most of the camps were in Eastern Europe. Some were found and their surviving inmates were rescued by British, Canadian and American forces coming from the West, others by the Russian army from the East, as the Second World War drew to a close in Europe in 1944.
As you would or should have been taught, WW2 as a whole did not end until the two American atomic bombs finnaly forced Japan to surrender in 1945.
I am very surprised you knew nothing of that.

@ArishMell I don't live in Hitler's head. Do you? How can you know every thought of his? There also is too much talk of race. More things than that were going on in WWII.
I know about Operation Barbarossa and the camps in the west. I am a Jew from Sochi. Sochi was not captured by the Germans but they tried. They came within 70 miles of my city. In Krasnodar the Einsatzgruppen were killing Jews. Some Jews survived because the Nazis thought they were Muslim. They had no interest in killing Muslims.

@emiliya Thank you for your background information.
Of you course neither you nor nor I live in Hitler's head, so it is hard for us to comprehend why he was so cruel.
Of course more "things" were happening in World War Two than the Nazis trying to murder all the Jews; but that was the crime that stands out more than any others. Their other main objective was land-grabbing to build an empire.
Japan was no angel either. Its army treated the soldiers and many of the civilians it captured, appallingly brutally simply out of sheer cruelty; and were unable to comprehend why everyone else thought that evil.

@Elessar America has to be very careful now. Trump's personal war in Iran is now totally derailing. He thought he could pull the same trick as with Venezuela. Stealing oil and uranium from other nations is now backfiring on him because Iran is much stronger and is able to oppose a much higher resistance.
At this rate, the US are losing that war and that is going to have a devastating personal impact for him.
