No corner shops.

@aboveaverageaveragejoe There probably were corner shops when the series was made, located in the Northern English countryside.
Since then rural areas throughout Britain have lost their shops, post-offices, pubs, filling-stations (some survive as repair-garages only), bus services, etc. Even some village churches have closed; and the nearest towns might have lost their doctors' surgeries, public libraries, post-offices and banks.
The main competition was the growing use of private cars, forming a sort of vicious circle; and the crushing of independent traders and other services by the supermarkets and now, on-line shopping and banking.
Further, in some rural regions (like that in the TV series), particularly the National Parks, so many houses are bought as second-homes or holiday-cottages that house prices are too high for most locals, and there are too few full-time locals left anyway to support local trades sufficiently.

@aboveaverageaveragejoe Did I? Please enlighten me!

@ArishMell did you never hear the joke "why did the Romans build straight roads? "
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@aboveaverageaveragejoe No, I haven't - I fear it may have something to do with having no corners, but do please tell.

@ArishMell Bingo! So Indians and Pakis couldn't put shops on the corner. Anyway I'm done with the conversation. Have a good week.
