Footbridge set for £200,000 removal in coming days

The footbridge at Caerphilly railway station
Caerphilly County Borough Council has confirmed when it will remove one of the footbridges over Caerphilly Railway Station.

The footbridge, which has been fenced-off since July 2023 due to being “unsafe”, will be removed in the coming days at a cost of £200,000 having been earmarked for removal since February.

There were calls to replace the bridge, but the council opted against this, saying it would cost nearly £2 million.

The bridge itself will be removed on July 28, with work to begin in preparation on Friday July 26.

Caerphilly Railway Station’s pay and display car park, next to the bridge, will be closed from 7pm on Friday July 26, and will reopen in “the afternoon” of Sunday July 28.

The station’s park and ride carpark will be closed from 7pm on Saturday July 27, with parked vehicles allowed to leave up until midnight on Saturday.

From then, the carpark will be closed to all vehicles until 2pm Sunday.

On the other side of the station, residents needing access to King Edward Avenue will have “limited overnight/early morning closures” imposed.

Vehicle and pedestrian access to the King Edward residential estate will be maintained between bridge lifts, according to the council.

The bridge removal itself is scheduled between 12.20am and 8.45am on Sunday July 28 under a “rail line blockage”.

Train services will run as per Transport for Wales’ timetable outside of the overnight rail blockage.

The council added all work is subject to chance based on the weather.

The Footbridge isn't being replaced it was removed yesterday the weather was good and a massive crane took our bridge down, school children in that area will have an extra five minutes walk back and for to school, I should imagine there's been a footbridge there for well over a hundred years, apparently replacing the bridge would cost nearly £2,000,000 maybe Caerphilly Council could find a second hand bridge.

I know these Councils overspend on plush offices and other silly items anyway their short of the readies at the moment maybe we should have a whip round for poor Caerphilly Council.

That's ridiculous. They should be ashamed. I bet it would cost less than £200,000 to fix it

@Gumba1000 The bridge has been taken away now, less than £200,000 to fix it sounds about right, the bridge was removed on the 28th July the following day the Council Leader dropped a bombshell announcing there was a black hole in their budget he announced proposed cuts
Leader warns of difficult decisions ahead

Cllr Sean Morgan, Leader of Caerphilly Council has now said “I want to be honest with the community, we need to make some very difficult decisions over the coming months.”
Blackwood Miners Institute – The council is proposing to withdraw its subsidy, the council currently provides a subsidy of £347,000 per year to run Blackwood Miners Institute.
Meals Direct Service – The council is proposing to cease delivering its home meals service, currently the cost to the council of delivering the services each year is around £444,000.
Llancaiach Fawr Manor House – The council is proposing to ‘mothball’ the venue, The council currently provides a subsidy of £485,000 a year to run the venue.
There’s no chance of the Footbridge over Caerphilly Station being replaced with Caerphilly Council Leader proposing drastic cuts, I read the bulletin from Caerphilly Council the following day the Footbridge was removed.

It seems to me it was a better world years ago maybe when a Past Prime Minister said “You Never Had It So Good” he was write.

@senghenydd What is the Miner's Institute and that Manor House used for? Both sound like historical, cultural identity buildings that need preserving.

@Gumba1000 The Miners Institute has things going on that benefits the local community classes, plays, shows, bands playing it's a shame, and the Manor House is a Museum it's a period Manor house dating back to King Charles the First he once visited it during the Civil War,, and also cutting back on Meals on Wheels a necessary service for the old and invalided folk.

It's going to be "Wild Wales" before long, the weak and the infirm will just be brushed aside.
