I have to wonder at the hypocisy...

Just how many of the Americans so outraged by Russia's use of torture in Ukraine were cheering when George W. Bush announced torture -- oh, pardon me, "enhanced interrogation" techniques that might lead to maiming or death -- were fine to use on Muslim detainees a few decades ago?

The US should never have done that. To me it's 100% un-American to torture detainees. Abu Ghraib was a nightmare.
@helenS that is why we did not do it on usa soil.. we still have gitmo.. tho
and black sites around the world..

@markansas Yes I think most of those horrible things would have been illegal inside the US. It made many people all over the world think America installs concentration-camp-like sites with sadistic personell in foreign countries. It was difficult to be pro-American after Abu Ghraib, and anti-Americanists in European countries had a field day.
What I don't get it why none of the main perpetrators were held responsible in terms of criminal law. Mr. Rumsfield, specifically. They only sentenced subordinate sadists like that Charles Graner monster, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
I was too young at the time to be really involved in discussions.
@helenS its who you know that is in power at the time.. two tired justice system.. sorry that is all i can think of as to how they got away with it.. a lack of caring at the top of the goverment. and sayings its ok because they did this so we can do that type of shit .

@markansas I see a deep connection between the fate of the ancient Roman republic (S.P.Q.R.) and today's American republic (U.S.A.).
Republics are not immortal.
