Russia using convicts to fight Ukraine

Putin has run out of regular soldiers so he’s working his way though Russias prisons in an effort to replenish his forces with fresh troops. They are promised 200,000 Rubles a month ($5,000 US) and freedom if they last 6months on the front line with only 5 days training.

Soon he will run out of prisoners … maybe then he will resort to child soldiers like they do in west Africa.

Putin should be embarrassed over how he launched a totally unjustified war that he can't even win
justanothername · 51-55, M
@deadgerbil Unfortunately he will never be embarrassed because in his view he is “denazifying” Ukraine and he is making sure that EVERYONE in Russia and beyond believes that NATO is the enemy and that Russians need to be protected from the evil that is NATO and the US. If you say anything against Putin you will be arrested for treason and sent to the gulag. This threat has meant that Putins approval rating is around 83% in Russia.

@deadgerbil The last time Russia had a failure like this was Imperial Russia and it’s war against Japanese held territory. Russia lost and the Tsar lost respect and ultimately his crown.

Part of his problem is that he hasn't officially declared war on Ukraine, so contract soldiers aren't obligated to fight.

As for using prisoners, all this means is that Putin is throwing as many people as he can at this war. It shows a willingness to use anyone who can be used and lack of regard for human life, but isn't evidence of Russia losing. He's wasting people who don't matter and managing to maintain ground, make some advances, and inflict *a lot* of damage on Ukraine.

If the regular soldiers who rape babies are like this I don't know what the convicts would be like.
TrumpIsFinallyGone · 41-45, M
That's got to be demoralizing for the units they go to. How could you trust them? Some of them probably just as likely to shoot other Russians as they are Ukrainians.
MissTaken · 36-40, F
Yep he’s got problems in replacing lost troops - Wagner the Mercenary Group are also recruiting heavily for him and then there is the rumoured 100,000 North Koreans on their way ☹️
Wow! At this rate the war won’t last more than 5 months
justanothername · 51-55, M
@Vivaci Don’t be so sure. The war that originally created the great Russian empire of 1627 lasted 21 years.
Putin wants to recreate the Russian Empire.
Lolz…in his weary old dreams…

He’s not God, and it’s time he realizes that. @justanothername
justanothername · 51-55, M
@Vivaci he may not be but he gave a speech to the students at St Petersburg University outlining his plans for Russia and becoming the Russian Empire of old was part of his intention.

Maybe they put the ones intended for fodder out in front.
In west Africa the trained soldiers stayed in the rear.
MrAboo · 36-40, M
North Korea offered 100,000 troops to Russia. You may be fighting Koreans before long too.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@MrAboo That wouldn’t surprise me. Although if Putin ever gets beyond Ukraine he will encounter NATO forces and armor which will be a different ball game than Ukraine civilian turned fighters.
War torn Eastern Europe is the new cess pool of the world, why?
justanothername · 51-55, M
@checkoutanytime Putin wants to recreate the Russian Empire.

Google it.

@checkoutanytime

Putin wants this.

Better than the Gulag!
justanothername · 51-55, M
@fun4us2b Their gulags are totally lawless brutal fight fest prisons. They make US prisons look like Holliday camps.

@justanothername Agreed, I read Gulag a History, by Anne Applebaum...

Like the Dirty Dozen. Loved that

I wonder if that might include Marc Fogel, who is not getting as much attention as Brittney Griner, despite having spent the past decade teaching history to the children of US diplomats in Russia
