Guess what brought the Internet down yesterday!

Low level web devices such as DVRs and baby monitors and other low level devices were infested by a virus to perform a DDOS attack at DYN a site that acts as an address book for the major companies that were attacked yesterday..

It wasn't a an attack by another country ie China or Russia. They are investigating the source of the attack as in who infected all of these low level devices with very weak passwords.

As you know, this has been predicted for a while. the internet of things is a rich playground for hackers. God help us when toasters are online.

@HoraceGreenley I agree! It is funny how such "low capability" hackers could cause such a crisis.
I suspect that this is the start of a new form of global terrorism.
😲 @Pfuzylogic: On the DR's show on TV last week they were talking about how some adult toys send data back to the manufacturer on usage (times used, how long, how often, etc) to help them improve their product line! 8)

@Pfuzylogic: Yeah that terrorism effort has been going on for a long time. It's a dangerous world out there.

@softspokenman: Isn't that curious.

I am sure that is why these devices had these communications.

Looks like a future plot of a Stephen King novel!

@HoraceGreenley: This is the first where I saw it affect a major Internet economy. I wonder how much money was lost during that time.

It reminds me of the time in 1972 when during the Olympics we had our first global televised event of terrorism of the murdered Israeli athletes and it has never settled down since

@HoraceGreenley: SW would never be the same!
Or, 2001 A Space Odyssey . 8)

@Pfuzylogic: good point. I seem to recall a DDOS attack some years ago in the top tier domain name servers. But i don;t remember the details.

But yeah, this is the first attack of this kind that moved up so high if memory serves.

@HoraceGreenley: it actually seemed very innocuous compared to the damage it could have done. Of course it is hard to measure the amount of commerce that was stopped.

@Pfuzylogic: True. But it is scary to contemplate. And I'm still worried about the US dept. of Commerce turning over the domain registry to ICANN. I'm waiting to see if there will be negative consequences.
