Actually ALL returning members of the famous Maori battalion were done an injustice after the war. They were promised land on their return but received NOTHING after fighting for their country.
In the battle of monte casino in Crete the members of the Maori battalion obtained scalps from the occuping German forces as proof that they were able to get up and into the Casino. This practice was later frowned upon and banned.
