Map making software

Does anyone have experience of making their own customised maps? All the map making software I have come across use pre determined templates. You can change the colours and add labels but you can't redraw the boundaries and create your own maps.

A long time ago, when I still had a desktop computer, i used Microsoft Paintbox. That did everything I wanted. I write history presentations and would rather draw my own maps than use ones I have found on the Internet.

Even the one which purport to show "current reality" are dubious.

I remember shifting from google earth - a satellite view of my house - to street view, to find that it had the wrong address. The picture of my house has my next-door neighbour's address !

Zero consequences so far for several years.

No idea why they expended so much dosh to photograph each property !

I have used it once to show someone in another country where I live; I have also given a link to someone to show where I used to live in France. What is the commercial value in that to google ? Absolutely notthing.

Maybe it is some sort of "I have mapped the world" syndrome .

I haven't found anything yet. What I am using now is ok for just labelling.
I can pick the coluors I want and just draw over the top.

I want to be able t0 draw maps like this
and incorporate them into my theme.

Is physical rather than political geography mapping software available that allows as few or no national boundaries as you need?

Jacko, ask Vladimir Putin about redrawing maps - he knows all about that. Chump would like to but......
