What the mainstream media here is not talking about!

Italy faces active food supply chain disruptions, empty supermarket shelves, and soaring production costs driven by regional transport blockades, severe water shortages, and geopolitical tensions.

Current Food Supply and Distribution Issues

• Trucker Protests and Blockades:
Transport strikes and blockades by truck drivers over high diesel prices have cut off deliveries to supermarkets, leaving empty shelves for fresh produce, fruit, vegetables, and fish—especially in southern regions like Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, and Campania.
• Fuel and Fertilizer Spikes:
Global energy disruptions stemming from conflicts affecting the Strait of Hormuz have doubled diesel prices and driven up fertilizer and operating costs for Italian farmers by up to 25% to nearly 50%.
• Severe Drought and Water Crisis:
Over 90% of Italian farms face water availability problems, with crisis levels reaching up to 99.2% in Sicily and over 97.5% across southern regions and islands. Drought conditions have heavily damaged corn, rice, soya bean, and milk production (with milk yields down roughly 20%).
• Food Inflation:
Surging production and transport expenses have escalated retail food prices, placing heavy pressure on household budgets where food and non-alcoholic beverages make up a significant share of spending.
