Try England for hyper inflation.

@SW-User Is it really bad in England? I was in England and Wales in 2015, and prices were similar to Continental prices.

SW-User
@helenS Last year our energy bill doubled. The excuse: the war in the Ukraine. Food prices are horrific, and smaller packages: excuse leaving the EU.
helenS · 36-40, F
@SW-User Wow – leaving the EU might affect some prices (customs etc), but not by that much.

SW-User
@ArtieKat Indeed. But the repercussions of the previous year are biting. Plus another one million people per year are brought into paying tax each year until 2028.
ArtieKat · M
@SW-User I'm not disputing that times are hard but this is largely a global phenomenon - Ukraine coming on the back of Covid and now the Middle-east
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
@SW-User energy prices for home and transport ( cars buses and trucks) are still climbing at a horrendous rate...

SW-User
@ArtieKat I just don’t fall for Tory propaganda. The blame lies at their mis management of the economy. Furlow included. Even they blame Truss.
helenS · 36-40, F
@braveheart21 Hey that's because the British government is so aware of environmental issues – they want you to ride your climate-friendly bicycle 🤭
ArtieKat · M
@SW-User A truism from my teenage years: "It doesn't matter who you vote for, the government always gets elected".
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
@helenS bullsh... They are profiteering same as the oil companies as the world price of oil fell the price to the public customer has continued to rise... Its a rip off pure n simple

SW-User
@ArtieKat And I hate to think who is coming up next. Some rabble coalition I suspect, influenced by Scottish nationalists and ulster unionists
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
@ArtieKat @helenS Our energy bills have doubled but it's not just the cost of the power, it's the standing charges, we pay 94p per day before we've used any power at all, if you're poor it's crippling, I live in Scotland in a very poorly insulated property to have to pay well over £300 a year before you've actually used any energy combined with rising food prices is literally a killer, many more people than usual will die this winter from the cold because of this.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@braveheart21 The consumer price actually fell for each of the past three quarters (although it will almost certainly increase in January owing to pressures of demand) and is well below what it was this time last year . . bear in mind there is no universal government subsidy at this time.
Food prices have increased, but are not especially expensive by European standards (despite the additional costs incurred by Brexit). We had an exceptionally liberal market and people got used to cheap food.

@SunshineGirl As I said my energy bill was £450 a month last year, and I must keep my family warm. I could not afford it. With no inflation, I still can’t afford it.
So we are all feeling better. The empty shops and restaurants tell a different take. And our food banks grow.

I don't know where you are but I'm a trucker and travel around the UK... All I've seen for the last few months is the pump price of fuel rising... @SunshineGirl
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
My monthly energy bill even with dual fuel discount went from £79 a month to over £300 a month in less than 18 months @SW-User

SW-User
@braveheart21 And my energy company has built up a surplus for me of £2400!
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
@SW-User I sold my house and now live in a trailer park ( static residential caravan) and pay for my electricity on tokens way less than the house.. My gas I buy as I need... Bet even here the fuel price has risen quite a lot
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@SW-User I don't underestimate the seriousness of the economic climate for you and millions of other people. I was just responding to the comment about "hyper inflation".
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@braveheart21 Well the petrol market is less diversified than the general energy market . . producers have certainly influenced the price by restricting supply.
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl even a senior director from one of the majors was interviewed on TV when prices started to rise and people were saying fuel shortages were the reason... He said directly there are NO fuel shortages

SW-User
@SunshineGirl I can’t understand how you are not experiencing it though.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@helenS No.
Prices for most things have risen a lot in the UK and many other countries, undeniably making life tougher for many people, and fuel costs are a major part of that because they affect everything.
To call it "hyper" inflation though, is merely and not very helpfully, hyperbole. It's nowhere near that level, and in Britain at least may have eased very slightly.

SW-User
@ArishMell Even in the Heath Wison Callaghan years I never had a 50% rise in energy bills. That is hyper inflation.
And you clearly don’t do a family shop each week.
