Taking out the Iranian embassy would indeed indicate that they are at least prepared for that eventuality.

If Iran attacked Israel directly then the Americans would 'have to' respond and the Biden administration would be fully committed on the Israeli side.

I don't think Biden actually wants this but he's given Israel carte blanche so far with just a lukewarm rebuke. Still giving them aid and weapons too. So sleepy Joe is sleepwalking into a forever war.

A full regional war with Iran is a real possibility. The only thing that can stop that is action to restrict Israel.
@Burnley123 May not stay regional with Russia and China's dependence on Iranian oil.

@Ozymandiaz I don't think it would get to a world war stage. Russia is too committed in Ukraine and China wouldn't send in troops. It's also too far away to help. Both would keep trading and give diplomatic support to Iran though.
@Burnley123 I dont know, I suspect that might change if they don't get their oil.

@Ozymandiaz Fair point but Iran has a fully division of it's military dedicated to air defense. They have an army, a navy, an air force and air defense. It's also massive and Tehran is out of air strike range from any viable attack point. Iran is also also logistically very hard to invade.

I could be wrong but it would be very hard for even a high tech military power like America or Israel to take out it's oil production.

Unlike Iraq, they've spent decades preparing the against invasion and air strikes. Missiles, would be more of a worry but I think (short of nuclear war or a years long invasion) it would be hard to cripple Iran.

A couple of reasons Iran has not responded:

1. This was not technically an embassy. It's a residential annex with no diplomatic function, so they can claim the Embassy was not hit.

2. Iran does not have the tech, or the balls to do it.

That message was delivered to Iran, loud and clear. Yedioth Ahronoth theorizes this is the real reason Iran has not retaliated. The US is also cautious, because Iran's proxies can deliver a painful terror attack on the US and US interests.
@Burnley123 Crusie missiles travel for thousands of miles. I doubt it would be beyond the US capability to overwhelm any Iranian missile defence system the same way Hamas did for the Iron Dome. the country could be flattened without putting a boot on the ground with enough aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf. that is my two cents anyway.

@Northwest Yes.

But my primary point is that the Israeli govt would like to get America involved and an escalation with Iran could lead to that. There are no indications that is Israel is slowing down and Iran will be under huge domestic pressure to retaliate, through proxies or otherwise.

This situation needs Israel to be forced into an immediate ceasefire.
