JustGoneNow It's pretty complicated.
In 1953, the CIA, along with British Intelligence, organized a coup, that overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran, and re-seated the Shah of Iran, in addition to giving him complete control. He was a puppet for us and the British. He also established a secret police, that makes the current crop of Revolutionary Guards look like boy scouts.
The Shah and his entourage enriched themselves, and kept the people poor. Dissent was dealt with swiftly, and permanently. This gave rise to the Mullahs, who promised the people freedom from the Shah.
Fast forward to 1979, when the Shah fled Iran, and Khomeini landed. The secularists stood by, thinking that Khomeini is not a serious figure, they will him do all the heavy lifting, and then they will swoop in, and establish a secular democracy.
First order of business for Khomeini? He rounded up all the secular leaders/intellectuals, and executed them. He also allowed "students" to take over the US Embassy and hold 52 of our citizens hostage, as payback for the US being the primary power behind the Shah's abuse of power, theft, arrests, torture and executions.
Our hostages got released, eventually, when Reagan became President, and traded arms for hostages.
The US neocns were still pissed though. They wanted to get even, so the people in charge, when Reagan was President, egged Saddam on, and supported him with logistical information, and convinced to invade Iran.
Iran is now pissed at us, again.
So, when Trump picks 52 targets, one for each US hostage held in 1979, he's reviving hatred. He's not simply playing to his crowd, he truly represents the racist, xenophobic base that elected him. He also shows that not only he does not care about the Iranian people, but he truly hates them.
The tit for tat needs to stop. Enough blood was spilled, but the neocons, and the white trash, have no sense of history, and the irony is that when they call Iran's actions archaic (calling for revenge), that's exactly what they're engaged in.
Do Iranians hate the US? I don't believe they do, but in times of crisis, people rally around a common national cause. Prior to our misadventure, the people of Iran were moving toward a secular democracy, and the unseating of the Mullahs. The Mullahs could not have dreamed of a better scenario. The people are now unified in rejecting what we just did, even though they were not fans of Soleimani.
