Just for the record, the game of so-called "American football" as you refer to it, was actually a game that was invented in Great Britain as far back as the 15th Century which involved throwing the ball, rather than kicking it like they do in a game of rugby.
The game of "football" then migrated to North America where Canada developed the first set of rules surround the game of football in 1868 which included an oblong-shaped ball instead of a round ball and which included a defined number of players per team which was 12 per side.
It was that same year that the Canadian Football League (CFL) came into existence which was established in Montreal Canada about 6 years ahead of the USA ever having played their very first game of football.
It wasn't until 6 years in later in 1874 that Canadian-style football migrated south into the USA as the Americans adopted the CFL rules, but then modified them over time to suit their specific understanding of the game 'football', which is why AFL rules are slightly different than the CFL rules.
So when you asked your question, it was the USA who showed up for the game of football LAST in the world, not first. WWII comes to mind as well.
The American Football League rules only apply to American football played in the USA but nowhere else in the world are AFL rules used.
