Middle aged English people, is it possible to have a sun tan and be a hermit?

Is the sun out long enough to get a tan in the UK?

@jackson55 Oh yes: I live near a seaside resort, and not ever so far from others, and I am not sure which is the more common sight in these places: the sun-tan or the sun-burn (the latter self-inflicted of course.)
