A gentle cycle ride in Dorset , England.

Swyre Puncknowle is not a character from Robin Hood and Burton Bradstock is not a country singer .馃槀

No, nor are Swyre and Puncknowle a single place either! :-)

(Shipton Gorge is - but whatever "Gorge" means here, it is not a vertically-walled river valley.)

A lovely area though, and one I ought explore more.

No miles given, but notice what's missing from the top of the post?

I've a friend in Somerset who had the idea of a comic novel whose characters were all named after villages in that county, a rich fund of names like those West Dorset ones, with their obscure, ancient etymologies. I don't think he ever wrote it though. The names are the easy bit: it's developing the plots and characters that's hard!

I鈥檝e often thought of turning Farrington Gurney, into a character in a Victorian crime novel . @ArishMell

@devonman Yes - that's the kind of thing my friend had in mind!

I've seen a photograph of a signpost from, I think, Norfolk, pointing to
Old Bolingbrooke
and
Mavis Enderby
;

.... to which some wag had added a board saying,
a son
.

.

Oh the bit that's missing from this and a lot of other signposts, is of course the roundel bearing the junction's name and National Grid Reference.
