Buffy Sainte-Marie

How do you feel about Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Order of Canada being rescinded?

BSM is an 83yo acclaimed singer songwriter who won many awards over the years. She claimed Canadian indigenous ancestry which was proven false by a CBC investigation

Buffy Sainte-Marie has written & performed unique songs of real social significance, and with apparent sincerity. I appreciate that and I don't care who her parents were.

Of what value is the order of Canada? - Except to confer arbitrary rights to brag or worship on those who think it actually means something.

tbh, It's kind of like Stolen Valour, if she received the OOC because she was supposedly "Indigenous" then she should definitely have it rescinded as she's not Indigenous by birth. If she received it for her contribution to Canada's culture as a singer/songwriter, then yeah, she should be allowed to keep it because she's earned it that way. Lies will eventually get you in the end, gone are the days where you could cover up that kind of stuff, someone will find you out somehow... 😵‍💫

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing.
Was it proven false beyond a reasonable doubt or balance of probabilities? Because I'd only believe in the investigation if it was beyond a reasonable doubt.

She has always claimed to be a Canadian Native Indian, but as it turns out, she was born as a white non-Native in the USA and then immigrated to Canada after being adopted by an Indigenous family in Canada. She then lived her life in an Indigenous northern community, but which does NOT make her an Indigenous person as she has otherwise claimed to be!

She had her Order of Canada award rescinded because the award was based on her being Indigenous, it was not based on her being a singer songwriter.

I do not care. The Order of Canada just isn't that important.
Is that the same Order of Canada Morgentaler was admitted to? I'd call it a mixed dishonour
Judge for yourself. She herself says - at the 7 minute mark - "Some are real. Some are pretend".

Kinda disgusting tbh all those years lying
@Lilymoon

Not just lying but threatening, too. I saw the doc when it first aired then watched it again a few minutes ago.
