Private health insurance

If private health insurance stopped covering ambulance use and/or the govt proposed ending the PHI tax rebate/offset would private health insurance suddenly become irrelevant and would the health insurance industry in Australia begin to collapse faster?

For many people, there are only three reasons PHI is relevant - to get a tax rebate/offset, to avoid MLS (Medicare levy surcharge) and to have ambulance cover. Extras cover with PHI is beyond affordability for most people now.

Unlike in the USA where health insurance is often part of the package for a person's employment contract that is very rare here in Australia. You either pay for your own PHI, or have none.
