The great oxymoron in Australia - affordable housing - unless you are rich/elite

'Affordable housing' in now the 'great Australian dream' replacing the former one being just 'housing'.

I was very, very, very (x 100 more 'very's) lucky to get my place in late 2023. There are people working in essential services like health/medical, emergency services, etc. who have to commute up to 120 minutes each way to/from their jobs to afford somewhere to live in Sydney.

I don't live in Sydney, but I couldn't have afforded to buy a house *anywhere* in Sydney with the funds I could access in 2023.

Many reasons for this - Covid plandemic effects being a key one.

Are you able to afford to live close to where you work in your part of the world or do you have a long (in time and/or distance) commute to your work (and back to where you can afford to live?

I live 30 km from work and it can take as little as 30 minutes (at 2 am) or as much as 90 minutes (between 8 and 10 am and 2 to 4 pm) to get to work, and similar time variations for the reverse journey depending when I need to travel to/from work. I have to drive - there is no public transport available because my job is a 24/7/365 operation.

Just to compare and contrast: We bought our "outer suburban" block back in 1973 for $15,500 which was not a cheap price. But the estate was well situated. We paid off the block, then couldnt get a loan from the bank, because we didnt have enough money in their bank. (That we owned the land outright was of no interest to them. So we borrowed from a Building society and built our $25,000 house. As soon as we moved in the interest rates shot up to 17.5% so we didnt get the phone connected for over a year.
Fast forward to today: Our suburb is no longer an outer subub. Our position is prime. and the house is worth $1.5 Million plus any day of the week. But I still love the position. Particularly as an old fart. Everything I need is 5 minutes walk. And I walk slower these day.
Stories change over time.. But I get your point. Affordable housing could be done. But the profits from construction pay taxes. And I certainly cant see how my grandchildren are going to be able to get the start we did.😷
