I love having a hardware store 10 minutes walk away in a local industrial estate
If I need anything that's the first place I go, rather than a massive regional big-box outlet.

My nearest proper, independent ironmonger's is rather more than 10 minutes' walk away, but I do use it occasionally.
Our local industrial estate does have two outlets of big chains serving trade as well as private customers, and I much prefer them over the chains aimed at DIY buyers; though sometimes the latter is useful on pure convenience.
There is also a very good trade & public, independent builders' merchant a few miles' drive away.
Long may these independents survive in the face of the supermarket-type chains.
