Holiday Dilemma

Being retired, kids still living at home, wife works part time and we have pets. I want to go to Australia and rent a car to live in for a few weeks while touring around.
It costs a chunk to get down there, and the car, but if I take the family it will cost 4 times more.. actually way more since they need to sleep in hotels or whatever, so probably 20X more.
Should I ditch them all and go by myself, or just never go.

Go on separate holidays. My wife and i went to europe last year. She went ro scotland while i went to france. Worked well. Tell her you want 6 weeks by yourself and she can have her own solo 6 weeks at another time.
The kids?? If they are over 18, then its their own problem to finance a trip.

You've done the work and retired, do it, you deserve it. I would do it just to get away from the kids still living at home.

Take the wife but leave the kids. They'll be happy to stay by themselves, if they're grown enough..?

@being This is a good suggestion. If only the kids were self sufficient. They are certainly old enough to be, but I doubt either of them is capable of going to the store to buy bread, or to clean up the mess they make in the kitchen, or wash their clothes. Too many video games. The dog would probably starve. Guess we could call them daily to remind them of things.
Hmm.. it might make things better in the long run now that I think about it.

@JamesBugman yes....I think too.
It's a chance to help them grow in self sufficiency too.
Maybe get them a couple of microwave dinners and put simple ingredients to make toasts and pasta, or eggs.
Yes they will need to be responsible with the dog!
Give them a little trust too..
:)..and maybe your wife will rest too away from the responsibilities.
You will pay a little more but you'll share which is nice too..
Feels like a dick move to just flake on your family to go do something you want to do... you might find that you don't have a family when you get back.

@HootyTheNightOwl So you're thinking I should go then? Thanks for the advise.

Would you miss your wife and kids
JamesBugman · 56-60, T
@meggie I would miss seeing their faces when we walk out on an amazing beach and run in the water. I would not enjoy seeing them run out because there is a fish, or being upset because there are bugs on the sand, or it's too hot, or they want more icecream. So it's a bit of a tossup.
I can only imagine the trip across the desert and all the complaining about everything.
Back packers hotels are cheap.. zero privacy but

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Yea, kids would hate that, and the first spider or cockroach they see they would be terrified. lol
