Sufism, once upon the time -French only

′ These films, made in 1973, are unexpected documents on what the traditional culture of Islam was like in Afghanistan, before this country experienced the disasters of ideological struggles and civil war
But they also represent, for a Muslim sensitivity, much more than that. First, objective and respectful testimony, made by a Western director, of deep and essential aspects of the spiritual culture of Islam. This culture, which is the inner weft, the living soul of traditional Muslim societies remains, despite its primordial importance almost unknown and not perceived in the West.
It has been an extraordinary mark of confidence that all these ′′ Sheikhs ′′ placed on Arnaud Desjardins by allowing him to film the aspects of teaching and inner life of their brothers. The presence on the film of these great masters alone is a deeply moving thing.
These are unique and exceptional documents, both for Islamic countries and the West. It is important and necessary in the running times that these films can have a very wide spread. A Western audience would have to discover, beyond the aberrant aspects of the politico-religious ideologies of recent Islamism, an otherwise deeper and more authentic reality of the age-old tradition of Islam."
