Welcome to India. Its a nice safe place. Dont believe the negative stories. Having said that, its always better not to try solo trips to remote lonely locations. I suppose thats not a country specific warning. Applies to most countries. Try package tours to get guided and safe trips.

@thevixen To me, no more scary than travelling or living in some parts of America, with mass shooting and gun violence pretty much daily. Thats just not something I am used to, and puts me on edge. No way to spend a holiday.. But its " normal" for the locals.😷

Children dont get shot in schools in india or pak. It might be "normal" some other countries.
My point being very very isolated incidents do not make the country unsafe. There are far frequent instances that do not make other countries unsafe.
