Why would a government that trusts its people ever fear voter ID?

The ability to think, to ponder has lost its luster, too many people refuse to consider any thoughts or opinion that do not agree with what they see as reality. THEN we are bombarded with “news” that isn’t. Fake news, propaganda designed to sway, not inform. Whatever credence the news once had disappeared decades ago. Perhaps in conjunction with what happened shortly after the John F. Kennedy assassination. My myopic view of events after that grim day should have previewed the course we travel now. Some politicians, very few, do care about this nation and its people. The remainder are there to occupy space, enrich themselves and have their face/words on TV. What his now laughingly called the media has become a shell of what was a noble profession. Its unfortunate that the congealing of corporate news has dwindled the information highway to a trickle. The American people, and in fact almost everyone world wide cannot accurately plan their lives because the media has so disgraced themselves by parroting manufactured “news” designed, not to inform but to guide thought. We, the American people are being guided to accept domination by an entity invisible, a devious charlatan whose only concern is their well being. It’s my opinion that there are but two mega wealthy people that care about mankind Elon Musk and Donald Trump. The remaining have succumbed to a rational whereby they succeed and the rest of us suffer.
I live in a resort in Florida , when I came here, I always thought that I had been relatively successful in life. What I’ve learned since is, I’m not a pimple on a successful person’s butt! I watch people who I would consider wealthy spend unbelievable amounts of money on property that they use occasionally. Wealth that I admire, but am unwilling to risk anything to acquire. There is nothing in this world that is guaranteed except politicians becoming superwealthy by scamming the public. Sophisticated thieves that have spent decades designing government to reward themselves and their voters with sums unbelievable.
if you think my words offensive and unwise, research what the new governor of Virginia has done to reward the government employees that elected her. A pattern of abuse of power that should cause the working people to become sickened. Ignored by a media complicit. We are, to use a cliché, are being preyed upon by the unscrupulous, fortified by the democratic political machine that wants, and may achieve total control. Think I’m wrong, look at California, New York, Minnesota and now Virginia. The slow creep of screw the public invading us. Soon, very soon, we may become Cuba north. The combination of government and the media willing to overthrow the will of the American people. Look around, if you can’t visualize that happening, you may be fearful of looking. Whomever is orchestrating this is close to achieving their goals. November of this year may be the tipping point! IF the democrats take control of Congress, we are doomed. There may be too much skulduggery happening for the voting process to stymie.
I hate to think as I do , but I’m pragmatic, why do you think the democrats don’t want voter I. D., or only citizens allowed to vote? You’d need to be sightless to ignore the obvious, many are!

I've got NO PROBLEM with the theory of voter ID, as long as it's free and easy. I DO have a problem with the practice of making it differentially harder for the elderly & working poor. https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/challenge-obtaining-voter-identification

"Voter ID laws have been estimated by the U.S. Government Accountability Office to reduce voter turnout by 2-3 percentage points, translating to tens of thousands of votes lost in a single state." https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/block-the-vote-voter-suppression-in-2020/

Alabama is a case in point. A state shouldn't be allowed to do what Alabama did, passing voter ID laws and then closing ID issuing offices in predominantly poor or black counties.
It's fair to make a cost-benefit analysis of voter fraud and voter ID. Voter ID is great in theory, but in many places it has been used to suppress voters. How much suppression?

Thus voter ID, as currently implemented, is costing about 2,000,000 lost votes per major national election. That's the cost.

Now for the benefit. Heritage Foundation found 1,620 cases of voter fraud over a 40 year period; see below. Let's make best case assumptions by overestimating the rate of fraud per major national election; let's assume that ALL of those 1620 cases happened in the 10 presidential years inside that span. Thus, 162 cases per election that could presumably be blocked by voter fraud.

Best case: voter ID might catch 162 bad votes per major election. That's the benefit.

So the cost benefit analysis tells us that it costs about 2,000,000 legitimate votes to catch 162 fraudulent votes. That's a cost of 12,345 legit votes lost per fraudulent vote caught.

That cost is WAY WAY too high!!!

Historical Baseline: A landmark 2014 study cited by the Brennan Center for Justice found only 31 credible instances of voter impersonation out of more than 1 billion ballots cast between 2000 and 2014.

Mail-In Voting Rates: Recent data from the Brookings Institution indicates that between 2016 and 2022, fraudulent mail-in ballots accounted for approximately 0.000043% of total mail votes cast, or roughly 4 cases for every 10 million ballots.

The Heritage Foundation's Election Fraud Database, which tracks a wider range of irregularities, has identified 1,620 total proven instances of voter fraud since 1982. Given that over 1 billion votes were cast in federal elections alone during a shorter period (1988–2020), this equates to a very low rate of occurrence relative to the total volume.

All so true. I also do think this November, just like Nov '24, will be the tipping point and what our country will look like in the future.
Than you for that.

The DOJ tried to extort the list of registered voters in Minnesota and then they would recall ICE. I don’t particularly trust trump or anyone in his Cabinet. Whatever they get, they will misuse so let’s not pretend that those in charge now are trustworthy.

In my area, you walk up to the table, show your ID and the poll worker draws a line through your name on the voter roll with a hi-liter, then you get your ballot.

I make it a point to bring my signed voter registration card and my gov't ID at the US Army base in addition to my driver's license. No problem.

Wonderful question, why?
That was way too long to read. lol.

we need change our country's name to CORPORATE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. virginia's close proximity to D.C. and its feeding trough, is what attracted so many liberal headed corporations to move their headquarters here, turning the state's majority over to liberal side.
The voter id system by itself is a sham and needs to be scrapped worldwide. Political parties maintain their own set of fake voters by using the law that a vote is a secret. This gives the criminals the advantage of dropping fake votes in a box.

The only reason anyone would oppose voter ID is because they plan to cheat.

Democrats can't win fair elections. Period.
