I’m a conservative, but l can’t stand corruption in large corporations

And l can’t stand the stupidity of religion, but it’s still better to be free of government.

A disappointing thread, or site, or whatever.

Just a couple of points:

(1) We cannot be 'free of government'. We can limit government, but we cannot be free of it. As that Founder said, if men were angels we would not need government. If angels governed men, we would not need limits on government.

Conservatism, like liberalism, is best thought of as a disposition, not an ideology. But ideologies are tempting: they make it easy to generate a position for the individual to take on any issue, like a mathematical formula. So many conservatives have a sort of borrowed ideology, at least on economic issues: minarchism/libertarianism. However, like all ideologies, while it has some central truths, it is not adequate for understanding and operating in the modern world.

(2) Apparently, there are some Leftists here, but none with any knowledge about the current conservative movement. It's a bit dismaying to see people proudly display their ignorance. It comes from being surrounded with like-thinkers. Take some time to read a bit about the conservative movement today. At some point I'm going to put up a list of high-quality conservative websites/publications, for those interested. (By the way, the Left is not alone in being ignorant of what their opponents think. Our side has plenty of people who know nothing about the real Left ... or rather, know things that are not true. They are not all evil people, conspirators, etc.)

(3) If you're still a teenager, well, wonderful. Good for you for being interested in politics. But ... you are still lacking in experience, and having an above-average IQ is not a substitute for experience. (It can help a bit.) Try to hold off on assuming an ideological stance until you've been out in the world a bit more. Reading can help, but it seems that today's young people, even the very bright ones, no longer read. A pity.
