Oh gosh there are loads of good ones.
For the heart: Far from the madding crowd ~Thomas Hardy
For the mind: The unbearable lightness of being ~ Milan Kundera
For the soul : An evil cradling ~ Brian Keenan

As to the 'why', Far from the Madding crowd is a story of pride and patience and all the things never said when it comes to love....and you're reading this from a very cynical guy !

The unbearable lightness of being because it explores idealism and changing political landscapes and the sad truth that nothing much changes no matter what your class; no matter what your aspirations; no matter what your beliefs.

An evil cradling is, to my mind, one of the greatest books of the modern age.
An Irish university English Lecturer is kidnapped and held hostage by a group during the Lebanese civil war of the 1990's.
He is beaten regularly by his captors but stubbornly refuses to bend to their will.
He dreams of home and little things in his possession take on new meaning as his time in capture goes on.
One of those books you read and every page leaves YOU exhausted !
Can't recommend it highly enough.

@Ozymandiaz so Dan Brown obviously got the idea for his novel from this. Not plagiarism per se but kinda sorta. Interesting
@Lilymoon Yeah not really plagiarism but it is like a novel based on this book in many ways

Any religious texts so people are aware of how important critical thinking skills, logic and reasoning are.

The Minnesota Connection, about how a Minneapolis, Minnesota, police chaplain was battling teenage prostitution and human trafficking, helping to get them off the streets and back home. I read it in 1984 when I was 14, it brought tears to my eyes.
