My mother was a truly awful cook, but you never had to wonder what was for dinner.

Friday was very hard, tough fish sticks with ketchup and frozen french fries.
Saturday was hard as hockey pucks fried hamburgers with potato chips and Campbells pork and beans from a can.
Sunday was tough roast beef, well done through and through, with instant mashed potatoes and baked carrots.
Monday was leftover diced roast beef, including the hard gristle and fat, (because it was too much trouble to trim it off), with leftover diced potato and carrot, fried into a hash.
Tuesday was Chun King chow mein over chow mein noodles.
Wednesday was Porcupine balls...(unseasoned ground beef with Minute rice mixed in, made into meatballs, and simmered in the electric skillet with Campbell's tomato soup.
Thursday? I think I've blocked it out...honestly can't remember...馃ぃ馃ぃ馃ぃ

How would you like to eat THAT for 18 years? 馃ぃ馃ぃ馃ぃ

@4meAndyou Canned foods were big back then. It was tough to get produce off season. Not making excuses for her. That sounds awful.

I do all the cooking at home. It鈥檚 a creative outlet for me. Always fresh food and an ever changing menu.

@carpediem Sounds wonderful!!!

My mother had some issues with food. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska, and apparently that's why all the beef she fixed was cooked to death...something about beef apparently, and I'm glad I don't know what it was.

I still remember those packages of cello tomatoes. They were basically green, hard tomatoes that had been gassed until they turned orange. Once in a while she would make a "salad".

She also hated spices. Salt and pepper, and cinnamon, and that was it. Hated Italian food, so we could never even order pizza! 馃槶馃ぃ

@4meAndyou cooking Italian is my favorite. And I鈥檓 not Italian. They simply have the best food in my opinion.

When I was a kid my parents often bought a half cow. Until they realized us kids were eating steaks for lunch.

My grandfather had a big freezer, but they used to fill it with my grandmother's home made pies. I do remember that when they needed meat they would send their own hogs and beef to the butcher in town, and the butcher would take his cutting fee out of the animal in meat.
