Zadoc the Priest

Zadok the Priest (HWV 258) is a British anthem that was composed by George Frideric Handel for the coronation of George II in 1727. Alongside The King Shall Rejoice, My Heart is Inditing, and Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened, Zadok the Priest is one of Handel's coronation anthems.

"So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and took him to Gihon.

Then Zadok the priest took a horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon. And they blew the horn, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!"

And all the people went up after him; and the people played the flutes and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth seemed to split with their sound." (1 Kings 1:38-40)

Thankfully Handel was around for George2, instead of the modern rubbish served up for Charles3.

Elizabeth had a better selection, with Holst and Vaughan Williams.

The music was wonderful. However, it was at the screen erecting phase that I started to lose track of things 🤔

@val70 Yes, I was just strangely unprepared for it on the day and found it quite difficult to connect to that part.

@SunshineGirl It's really ancient and biblical. The commitment of a monarch to his/her God and nation, in short. Like being struck by a beam of pure light. That's why there's a screen

@val70 I found the words and music very powerful. Now thanks to modern technology (and a bit of transparency) I can study the pictures repeatedly 🙂
