I don't mind Country music. I grew up with some of it and Dolly Parton was among those I loved to listen to when my dad put his old records on.
"Jolene" left a big impression on me because the words have a deep meaning and I would picture that lady in the song begging for Jolene to leave her the man she loved...
Also, I liked those songs she, Emmylou Harris, & Linda Ronstadt played together.
Another great singer that leaves us.
RIP and I will always keep a special place for Jolene in my memory.
i am not a country girl, even though i was brought up on a farm... country music has never been my taste... but i do admire Dolly Parton, for her work ethic, her intelligence, her street smarts and her philanthropy.
This is so funny. I'm the one who grew up surrounded by country music, but none of it from Dolly's era. I know maybe 2 or 3 of her songs and none of them are on any of my playlists. And prior to all these posts and news reports, I knew nothing of her philanthropy. 🤷♀
@samueltyler2 They do it to do good, not to have people say how wonderful they are. It's awesome when they do get their well deserved accolades but they are usually not glory hounds.
@sarabee1995 True. I only associated Dolly Parton with her hairstyle/wigs, her "funny" Southern accent but never bothered to dig deeper and see who she was really and what she had done besides singing.
@samueltyler2 It's never been a conscious "choice". I just didn't follow or pay much attention to pop culture. So when someone from Hollywood (or Nashville) dies, I rarely know much about them.
@ineedadrink And they most certainly should get their accolades. I was just making note that I feel weird always being the one who knows nothing about them.
@Stephie Exactly! I was the same way. Every time I saw her, I would mentally just shrug at the crazy hair and change the channel. I knew she was a country singer, but from a time before I paid attention to country music. 🤷♀
