After 36 years of parking in their driveway, couple is told it's illegal to do so?

This makes absolutely no sense to me, especially in a place with horrible parking options like San Francisco.

"They received a $1,542 fine for parking on their own property -- with the threat of a $250-per-day fee if they didn't get the car off their carpad."

"The San Francisco Planning Department is enforcing a decades-old section of code that bans motor vehicles of all kinds from being parked on a carpad or setback in front of a house unless it's accompanied by a garage or cover."

Seriously,who cares if someone parks on their own property? I hate over bearing rules like this...

Meanwhile, the smash-and-grabbers have been largely ignored, as long as each looter in the gang is careful not to steal more than $900 at each store that the gang robs.

Until even in San Francisco, the voters couldn't stand it any more and recalled that utter disgrace of a D.A., Boudin, who wouldn't enforce criminal laws, at least for a certain protected class of "oppressed" criminals.

Other laws, however, seem alive and well.
Leave it to San Francisco,,, 🙄 🙄 🙄

Are you talking about parking on the sidewalk? .. or are they parking within the footprint of the foundation of the their house?

I was born and raised in SF. I'm not totally sure, but I think what would be considered to be a driveway which is what the car drives on to get into the garage, in SF with the big wide sidewalk and no front yard, I think in those cases, the driveway is really an easement on land owned by the city.

If a car parks on it, if it's a big enough car , or maybe a truck, it makes it difficult for pedestrians to get by, maybe even impossible if it's a person with mobility issues.

I know it sucks that they can levy such a fine and continue to bilk them at such rates on a daily basis.

How did your friend show up on the city council's radar? Sometimes it doesn't take much.. .and when they notice you, they can be relentless and that take any defensive action against them as an act of defiance.

If I was your buddy, I would get shin splints or something that would require one of those blue "handy hooks" from DMV, then have the city come designate a "handicapped" parking spot , hopefully right where he wants to park. ADA trumps all those wannabe royals at city Hall .

WTF?! That's absolute fucking bullshit! 🤬

@Viper

So they are supposed to park on the street instead, right?

Lunacy. 🙄

@Thinkerbell I guess? Which absolutely makes no sense as SF is infamous for not having enough street parking to start with...

Also, this started by someone calling the government on them and their neighbor, saying they're breaking the law...

@Viper

Usually the neighbors don't like it if you park on the street, if you have a driveway or garage. 🙄

"Also, this started by someone calling the government on them and their neighbor, saying they're breaking the law..."

probably a neighbor with a grudge. 🙄

Oh, is that what you said to her? 😂
I thought Brits were supposed to be gentlemen. 🙄
WHAAAAAAT?!

sounds like a revinue raiser to me .

Total bullshit.
Sounds over the top. Then you realize it's fascist San Francisco.
It’s insane; they live in an area where the residences (like mine) were built before people had cars, so there were no garages. The reason they could park there before was because the City didn’t know:
The planning department was alerted to the Craines' use of their driveway by an anonymous complaint that was lodged against the Craines and two of their neighbors, who were also tagged with the same violation.

In the end, the city closed the case against the Craines and threw out the fines after the couple agreed to no longer use the carpad, according to KGO.

City officials told the Craines that the couple can build a cover for the carpad, or a garage, if they want to continue to park there.

Whoever ratted them out really and truly needs a butt-kicking. 🙄
@Wol62 I really despise that. Causing problems for people just because one can. If there’s such a thing as karma, you probably have a boatload coming your way. 🤨

@bijouxbroussard What...what do you mean?
Wol62 · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard Oh karma well after that I got a speeding ticket, forgot about it and didn't pay it.

It got to the stage where they issued a warrant for me.
